About me
“Point of view is worth 80 IQ points.”
My engineering background
I’m James and I’m an engineer. I’ve been writing software professionally for about twenty-five years, although I started long before anyone was willing to pay me for it.
My professional work began with real-time control and data acquisition for industrial robots, then moved through desktop products, cloud platforms, full-stack systems, simulation, optimization, decision support and engineering leadership. The part I continue to enjoy is helping teams step back and look clearly at the problem they are actually trying to solve. That often makes the work considerably simpler, because some of the hardest problems come from assumptions about the solution rather than anything the outcome actually requires.
This site is where I write about what interests me. At the moment that's looking into different ways to work with AI.
